Scoping review
The scoping review, led by ZALF, explores the various values, costs, and benefits tied to pastoralism and wildlife, as seen by different stakeholders. It will look beyond direct impacts to include indirect effects like disturbances and opportunity costs. While negative impacts like livestock depredation are well-known, the task will also highlight positive effects that are rarely studied. The CoCo team will conduct a review using existing studies and frameworks to map these values. Consultations with stakeholders and insights from interviews and surveys help to create a detailed catalogue of how different groups view these interactions.
Cost-benefit analysis of strategies to reconcile conflicting objectives between wildlife management / conservation and pastoralism
This task, also led by ZALF, focuses on balancing wildlife management and pastoralism through cost-benefit analysis. Using data from previous tasks and public sources, the team creates financial models for different herd scenarios, considering farm costs, protection expenses, and subsidies. This helps to identify viable strategies for pastoralists, showing where production becomes unfeasible. The analysis is then extended to consider broader landscape values using a Multi-Criteria Assessment Framework.
